She began her career in the 80s before coming to prominence with her performance in Tezaab, a film where she starred with veteran actor Anil Kapoor. Her next appearance was in Dil in which she starred alongside Aamir. In the beginning, as a child growing up in Mumbai's middle-class, she learned to dance. In her early years, as she began to perform as an actress, most films she produced did not succeed. She eventually found success and was one of the top actors in the Indian film business. Following her marriage, she took some time off from acting before returning. She played a major role in Gulaab Gang, a film about women's struggles in India. Dixit was awarded fifteen Filmfare Awards nominations, of which she took home eight. Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian honor in India. Also, she has earned a name as a social activist.
